Girl’s Golf Up to Par

If things go their way, the girls’ golf team soon will emerge as section co-champions. It’s quite a turn around from last year when they didn’t make the team or individual WPIAL playoffs.

“This group has a good chance of making the team playoffs and once you get to that event, it depends upon which team is playing well that day,” says Coach John Broderick.

He also believes all five starters – two juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen– will go to the individual section tournament.

“Every girl has had a good season and has the capability to advance to the WPIAL finals,” predicts Coach Broderick.

“While our record last year was not what we were hoping for, we did have a lot of players gain valuable experience,” he adds. “They have been able to use that experience this season to improve their scoring averages. The players have been able to even out the highs and lows and in doing so, have posted a very respectable record.”

The term “respectable” is somewhat of an understatement. With only two games remaining in the regular season, the team is 7-1. There is good reason to believe a section co-championship is well within reach. They play back – to -back games September 23 and 24 – Shadyside Academy and Shaler Area high schools – and are assured of wrapping up with a winning season. However, Shadyside always fields a good golf team and will be a tough opponent. They are responsible for the Lady Foxes’ one loss this season.

The 2014 team is comprised of the following girls:
Seniors : Kate Fink, Olivia Heinauer and Maren Martin.
Juniors: Ciera Miller, Emily Robosson, Libby Friend, Pryanka Shah and Missy Crittendon
Sophomores: Ally Robosson, Kersten Nestle and Ursula Meyer
Freshman: Hannah Conroy, Toby Lazear, Cara Levicoff and Katie Bazzone

“Ciera, Emily, Ursula, Cara, and Hannah have been consistent starters throughout much of this season,” says Coach Broderick, “but the success of this year’s team can be traced back to the overall sense of team unity and the ‘family’ atmosphere that the girls have created amongst themselves.”
