Heading West for Rugby

If Aidan Carlier was a WPIAL quarterback committing to a top-25 program, his recruiting story would be big news.

Instead, the Fox Chapel senior plays the fly-half, the rugby equivalent to a signal caller.

Rugby is a club sport at all but about 20 colleges, so Carlier wasn’t seeking a scholarship. He just wants to play at a high level and targeted Arizona after it reached the national final when he was a high school freshman.

“It’s a club sport, but they take it seriously out West,” Carlier said. “I knew if I wanted to go to a good rugby school, Arizona would be the best option for me.”
